Team Reviews for States with Feral Swine Populations

BACKGROUND: The National Plan for PRV Post-Eradication identifies the relationship between Feral/Wild/Captive swine and the commercial swine herd as an issue where there must be assurance of minimal transmission risk to enable declaring the U.S. free of PRV.  The National PRV Control Board requires each state in its application for PRV status to detail their program to address the risk to the commercial swine herd from feral swine.

RESOLUTION: The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) calls on USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services to establish regular team reviews of the states’ activities and measures in place designed to prevent feral swine from affecting the PRV status of the states’ commercial swine herds and suggests the use of the Feral Framework Document approved at the 2003 NIAA Annual Meeting. Such teams must include representatives of the following: Federal, State, Industry (pork producers).
