NIAA Animal Care -- 2005 Committee Report

 

Animal Care Committee Report
April 6, 2005

The Animal Care Committee met on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM CST, during the NIAA 2005 Annual Meeting in St. Paul Minnesota, with 20-25 people present.  Dr. Mark Spire served as the Chair and Dr. Jer Geiger served as the Vice-Chair.

The committee session focused on broad perspectives of welfare-related issues.  The following speakers presented relevant information pertaining to proposed audits and current legislative and activist initiatives.

Kay Johnson, National Issues Relating to Animal Welfare

Old Business: Review of existing resolutions and position statements.  See updated resolution and position document.

New Business:

  • (Include the number of new resolutions accepted, number of existing resolutions amended or revised and number that were removed)

  • Motion made to transfer Animal Care and Handling Guidelines (beef, dairy, swine) from video to CD format.  Motion carried.

  • Motion made to develop educational materials on Care and Handling Guidelines for sheep and goats in both English and Spanish.  Motion carried.

General discussion:  We (NIAA Animal Care Committee) should take a more active role in reviewing and disseminating current information relevant to animal care and well-being issues.
