NIAA Brucellosis Eradication Task Force-2003 Mid-year Committee Report

Brucellosis Eradication Task Force
Mid-Year Report
September 9, 2003

During the 2003 NIAA Leaders Forum, the following report was given:

The Brucellosis Eradication Task Force activity, like the disease, has been at a low ebb. There have been no new cases in the two remaining Class A states since October 2002. In addition, I have not gotten any feedback as a result of the 2003 Resolutions and Position Statements that were sent. I expect the federal agencies preoccupation with END have disrupted the flow of normal activity. In addition, there are an unusually large number of staff changes and realignment of duties apparently taking place with in USDA. Concerns still exist related to Free ranging brucellosis-infected species such as feral swine, elk, and bison and the continuing threat of spread to domestic livestock. The spread of disease from elk to cattle that occurred in Idaho recently clearly demonstrates the legitimacy of the perceived threat.
