NIAA Cattle Health Committee-2005 Committee Report

Cattle Health Committee
2005 Mid-Year Report

Issues of significance occurring in the cattle industry:

  • iDairy – a coalition that has been formed to bring the dairy industry together and to move forward in the effort of animal identification.  www.iDairy.org

  • A national BVD symposium will be held in conjunction with the National Cattlemen’s and Beef Association annual meeting in February.

  • Johne’s Education Initiative has been launched, the web site is active, www.johnesdisease.org and Ken Olson has been named the Johne’s Disease education coordinator.

  • Business Continuity Exercises – North Carolina’s dairy industry is addressing the question of Business Continuity during/after a foreign animal disease event. The measure of success may not be how fast we eradicate a foreign animal disease but how many farms we have survive so that product can be produced after or during a disease event.

No activities of the committee since the last annual meeting.  (Except for my attendance at the ARS BSE Industry Consultation Meeting, May 19, 2005 in Washington, DC.)  See attached report.

No action on 2005 resolutions.

No planned revisions on committee mission, objectives, etc.

Plans for the committee meeting at the Annual meeting – Cattle Health Committee will meet during the annual NIAA meeting.  Once a theme for the annual meeting is chosen, the committee will try to follow this theme in their choice of topics and speakers.

Currently no requests or recommendations for the Board.
