NIAA Environmental Issues -- 2003 Committee Report

Environmental Issues Committee
April 9, 2003

Presentations included:

CAFO Rules & Livestock Regulatory Issues.  Dave White.  Mr. White had a handout for everyone.  He received several questions both during his presentation and afterwards.

Challenge of Deer Carcass Disposal with CWD.  Dr. Robert Ehlenfeldt.  He had many questions on what are the proper methods of carcass disposal for infected animals.  Their concern is with the different methods be accepted by society.  Also, there was much discussion on lowering the numbers of both deer and wildlife that are becoming more of a threat everyday to domestic livestock.

Composting: a Way of Carcass Disposal.  Dr. Harold Keener had excellent audience participation with the different methods of composting for dead animal removal.  How long does the process take?  Has there been different research methods conducted on different livestock species.  Has there been any research conducted on the potential pathogens or microorganisms in the finished product..  Much discussion about the topic was presented.

Alkaline Hydrolosis as a Method of Carcass Disposal.  Dr. Barbara Powers.  This was a very interesting presentation because this process is new to a lot of people.  Dr. Powers explained the process and the challenges from using this process.  Good discussion from the audience.
