Welcome to the ID/INFO EXPO 2006 Virtual Media Center!

Over the next three days (August 22-24) we’ll be bringing you reports on 30 speeches, presentations and panel discussions from this timely and informative meeting on animal ID and the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) currently being implemented by the US Department of Agriculture, the 50 states and various tribal governments.  

ID/INFO EXPO is an event held annually by the National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) and has become one of the premier meetings on animal identification.  TRI-MERIT™, a single-source animal tracking and verification program powered by Global Animal Management, Inc. (GAM) is sponsoring the pressroom at the event.  

The information will be sent out at the end of each conference day in a word document with links to audio files, photos and press releases with contact numbers for you to call for more information.  Please feel free to let us know if there are any specific questions you would like to have addressed to any presenters, including Secretary Johanns, as we will be interviewing them on the issues.

Here are the reports and interviews we expect to file: 

From Tuesday, August 22 (Available for airing/printing by 5 AM, August 23)

  • From the Species Working Groups (SWG) whose chairpersons will be reporting on their groups’ recommendations.  SWG are:  bison, camelids, cattle, cervids, goat, horse, poultry, sheep and swine. 

From Wednesday, August 23 (Available for airing/printing by 5 AM, August 24)

  • Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns, Keynote Address – will include audio of his remarks, press conference, and interview.

  • With Dr. John Clifford, who is in charge of NAIS Implementation at USDA’s, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services (APHIS, VS) on “Accomplishments to Date.”

  • With Orlando Boca, USDA, APHIS, VS, CEAH, on the Animal Trace Processing System (ATPS.)

  • With Neil Hammerschmidt, USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services on the Animal Identification Number (AIN) Management System.    

  • With Scott Stuart, Chairman of the NIAA Board of Directors, and CEO of the National Livestock Producers Association.

  • With Robert Fourdraine, Chairman of the ID/INFO EXPO 2006 Program Planning Committee, and Director of the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium.  

  • With Greg Ibach, Nebraska Department of Agriculture, on “State Legislation to implement NAIS.”

From Thursday, August 24 (and the late afternoon program) August 23, (Available for airing/printing by 5 AM August 25.) 

  • On a panel discussion entitled, “Benefits and Concerns about the NAIS”  From representatives of State Veterinarians, Cow/Calf Producers, Livestock Markets, the U.S. Meat Industry and “Concerned Livestock Owners.”  

  • On a panel discussion entitled, “Mainstream Animal ID Solutions and Practical Applications” with emphasis on “street tested” technology from the perspectives of the Feedlot, Swine, Meat Packing and General Livestock Industries.  

Also, NIAA and TRI-MERIT will be surveying attendees at the start of the meeting on what they see as major issues facing animal ID and NAIS.  We will report on the results of the survey, Thursday, August 24.
