The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) announces the seventh in its series of Antibiotics Symposia: Antibiotic Stewardship: Collaborative Strategy for Animal Agriculture and Human Health. All sectors of the animal food production industry and partners in human medicine and public health will come together for collective and continued dialogue around one of the most important topics in animal and human health today.
Since 2011, the NIAA-hosted Antibiotics Symposium has provided a setting for a thoughtful exchange of ideas for the betterment of animal and human health. Through six symposia, NIAA and its partners have been at the forefront of bringing stakeholders together to analyze, evaluate, and discuss the use of antibiotics and the threat of resistance. As the topic of antibiotic resistance has received increasing attention in the media and public awareness, we have found ever-greater value in working together to support the growth of our industry, while doing our utmost to protect human and animal health.
Our industry’s approach to the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture has evolved at a rapid pace in the six years since the first NIAA Antibiotics Symposium and will continue to evolve. Changes in consumer demand have roiled the marketplace. Governments in the US and other countries have enacted new regulations and guidelines. Industry groups and professional societies have produced numerous and recommendations addressing the use of antibiotics. And the role of veterinarians in the management of antibiotics on farms and ranches across the country is continuing to grow.
Researchers continue to work on finding ways to use antibiotics more effectively and efficiently in both humans and animals and to limit the development and spread of resistance. And it continues to be a challenge to translate the complex scientific knowledge flowing from this research into information that can be used in the day-to-day work of veterinarians, farmers and ranchers and that can also educate the public and address the misinformation and misconceptions too often held by consumers.
At this year’s symposium, leaders from all parts of our industry—from farmers to processors to retailers—will join with veterinarians, researchers and experts in human and public health and representatives of Federal and state agencies to present new information and talk about their experiences in adapting to a rapidly changing business environment and marketplace. We will recognize the progress our industry has made while acknowledging the continued challenges we face going forward. We will hear some of the latest developments and hear practical suggestions on managing change. We’ll review ways of communicating and getting our message out so that consumers have accurate and reliable information. And as always, we will seek identify our common values, share our knowledge and experiences in discussion and honest dialogue and look for areas of consensus on strategies to take us into the future.
This year’s Symposium will be held October 31-November 2, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, VA.
